Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), DHAKA, BANGLADESH

 Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) is the premier Postgraduate Medical Institution of the country. It bears the heritage to Institute of Postgraduate Medical Research (IPGMR) which was established in December 1965. In the year 1998 the Government converted IPGMR into a Medical University for expanding the facilities for higher medical education and research in the country. It has an enviable reputation for providing high quality postgraduate education in different specialties. The university has strong link with other professional bodies at home and abroad. The university is expanding rapidly and at present, the university has many departments equipped with modern technology for service, teaching and research.  Besides education, the university plays the vital role of promoting research activities in various discipline of medicine. Since its inception, the university has also been delivering general and specialized clinical service as a tertiary level healthcare center.

Physical Organization

BSMMU complex has six main multistoried buildings that are identified as Block-A, Block-B, Block-C, Block-D and Cabin Block, F-Block respectively.

Block-D:

is the 18 storied building (under construction). This block accommodates the Emergency, Casualty, Cardiac emergency, Obstetric & gynecology emergency, Orthopedics emergency,  Cardiology, Cath Lab, CCU, Cardiac surgery, Vascular surgery, Pediatric hematology & oncology, Pediatric cardiology, Pediatric gastroenterology, Hepatology, Orthopedics, Psychiatry, Gastroenterology, Hematology, Medicine, Oncology & Institute of Nuclear Medicine (INM) a joint project of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission and BSMMU. The INM has modern diagnostic and therapeutic facilities including computerized ultrasonography, gamma camera and a well equipped radioimmunoassay (RIA) laboratory. This is considered to be the best center for non-invasive diagnoses. 

Department of Pediatric Hematology & Oncology

The Pediatric Hematology and Oncology department of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) is a dynamic department dedicated to treating and increasing knowledge about all aspects of hematological diseases and cancer in children. The Pediatric Hematology and Oncology department started its journey from 1985 as a part of Pediatric oncology unit within Pediatric department in BSMMU.  After 1991, Pediatric Hematology and Oncology department got Government recognition in IPGMR. After a long time in 2004; the department received official recognition of full pledged Pediatric hematology and oncology department with 27 free beds and 4 paying beds.

The mission of pediatric Hematology and oncology department is to provide the highest quality of care and support for children with cancer and blood disorders and to promote acquisition of knowledge that will lead to improvement in therapy and cures. The department has an outstanding tradition of providing excellence in patient care and research. This department has successfully changed the ideas about childhood cancer and other hematological diseases among physicians in Bangladesh, it is renowned all over the country for its clinical expertise in pediatric hematology-oncology, providing state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment and long-term management of patients.

Since 2012, the pediatric Hematology and oncology department has started Twinning Program of World Child Cancer, collaboration with University College Hospital, London & British Columbia Children’s Hospital and Vancouver, Canada. Under this program, this department has given training to doctors and nurses.
